If you are new to the ‘net or an old pro, chances are you have heard and tried to learn SEO. But, what you quickly found is that it is not that easy. Of course, done correctly SEO skills will make your website blast to the top spot in no time at all. However, it takes time and like most things that take time the average person quits far too early. So, I’ve included some steps you need to take to learn SEO and do it right. Let’s go . . .

Learn SEO Lesson One: The first thing you need to do is build a respectable website. This should be your first job and is more important than anything else. If you don’t have a website of at least 50 pages filled with content wrapped around your keywords then you will be behind the eight ball from the start. So, spend time creating a quality site and you will have a foundation to build your SEO skills upon.

Furthermore, in your site design you need to think of simplicity as your driving force. You should have plenty of text that includes your niche’s keywords and these should outweigh your html content every time. Also don’t forget to check your pages against multiple browser types. What looks great in Internet Explorer doesn’t always check out well in Mozilla and vice versa. I used to tell people to shoot for Explorer but there are so many Mozilla users that you need a site that holds up under both platforms. When your goal is to learn SEO don’t forget the details!

Learn SEO Lesson Two: The second thing you need to do is keep web pages small. Today, with faster web access you can take some liberties. However, 15K is a good target and you should NOT go overboard with flash, auto streaming video or the like. These will only slow down some visitors and then they won’t be back!

Make is your goal to build at least one page of good content daily. And, you should include 250 to 500 words that contain your list of keywords that you researched. You should shoot for a minimum of 5% word density and preferably 20%. This means that you have 5 of your keywords for every 100 written words. Or, 20 of your keywords for every 100 written words. I personally shoot for 7% – 10%. Anything more and it becomes tough to read.

Learn SEO Lesson Three: Submit your site to as many root directories as possible. Start with Google, Fast, Altavista, WiseNut, (write Teoma), DirectHit, and Hotbot. Additionally, use web 2.0 like Delicious, Stumble Upon and Squidoo.

If you are making your website on the back of WordPress or some other blogger software then you should additionally ping your blog to any of the sites available. This helps it to get cached quickly which will start a snowball of traffic. It is best to ping your site after posting new content. This tells the world that your site is fresh and dynamic!

As you can see, if you want to learn SEO you have to be prepared to work at it. I’ve touched on a few of the easier steps in the process but there are more advanced methods as well. However, if you are truly going to learn SEO you must start with these and build upon your skill set over time. Good luck!
